How the work is funded, and kept independent
A complete mapping of the world’s bilateral relationships is a public good. It takes years to build and it has no natural commercial sponsor, because the volumes that matter most are often the ones about the quietest relationships.
The volumes no market would commission on its own
There are 18,528 country pairs. A commercial publisher would produce the fifty that sell and leave the rest unwritten. Our commitment is to the whole set, which means the project cannot be funded by demand alone.
Funding does not buy a sentence
Editorial control over content, sourcing, selection, and sequencing rests entirely with the editorial team. No investor, partner, or supporter holds review rights over any volume, influence over which country pairs are published or when, or the ability to alter, add, or remove material. This policy is a condition of every partnership we accept.
Support the permanent record
Support can take the form of underwriting a region, funding a language edition, or endowing library placements. If your institution’s mission includes the strengthening of international cooperation, we would like to speak with you.
